It isn’t very often I get to take binoculars to a conference! So I made the most of it at yesterday’s #RegenerativeBusinessSummit hosted by The Crowd at The WWT London Wetland Centre.

It is always a pleasure to share Interface’s progress, but to do so alongside so many other fantastic speakers made it even more enjoyable.

The topic of regeneration might mean slightly different things to different people. But what is clear is that we need to move from a focus of doing less bad, to one of actually doing good. There is a lot of work to do, but seeing so many passionate people making progress, speaking openly, and sharing challanges certainly provided a big bucket of hope and inspiration that can sometimes be hard to find.

How can business lead the shift towards a regenerative future?

The second highlight of my week was the day spent with business leaders at the London Wetlands Centre (WWT), hearing about practical and possible paths to regenerative outcomes. Our co-founder at The Good Board, Louise Gatenby, spoke about her expertise on regenerative boards. #regenerativefuture, #regenerativebusinesssummit, #leadershipasaforceforgood, #purposedrivenleadership

How many conferences do you go to where you get to have a chat with some otters at lunchtime? 🦦🦦

Yesterday I was at the WWT London Wetlands Centre for the first Regenerative Business Summit. What a wonderful venue for these conversations!

Otters aside, the highlight for me was the special group of people they had convened, and the conversations that sparked throughout the day ✨

Here are some of the things that got me thinking...

We talked about the systems we rely on for long term resilience and wellbeing - nature, biodiversity, social systems. These are all interdependent and ensuring that they are thriving and resilient for future generations requires collaboration. Caroline Macfarland

Running a business is like choreographing a dance. You get to change the tempo and choose who to invite. Kresse Wesling CBE
Dulma Clark talked about “well-doing” which I definitely excited me as a concept. Wellbeing is the outcome, what do we need to actually do right now to enable that?

We need to redesign business so it’s in service of life, not just in service of finance. Erinch Sahan

Too often we are looking at business success and objectives in terms of financial extraction rather than long term resilience of the business. What can we do to shift that perspective? Erinch Sahan

I had a few conversations about people bandying around the term regenerative and it becoming the new buzz word. So I liked these questions from James Cashmore which make it more tangible. If you say you are regenerative... What is it that you are regenerating? Why are you regenerating? How regenerative are you being (e.g. this year vs last year)?

The power is with nature, we just don’t know it or behave like it is. James Cashmore

Philip T. asked us to do something today to get us closer to a notion of regeneration. I enjoyed spending time with him and a small group, outside, with our shoes off, connecting with each other and the grass beneath our feet. That’s the second conference now where I’ve got barefoot! Maybe we need a barefoot conference 🤔

Charmian (Char) Love got us thinking about poetry and using the arts to help people feel the change and connect to it emotionally. In the resulting discussion, we discussed how poetry can be a more effective way of sharing advice and lessons with people (I talked about children’s books) - far more effective than “telling”.

Were you there yesterday? What resonated with you?

If you weren’t there, I’m curious to know what jumps out at you from my musings above?

I left feeling inspired and full of hope for what we can be achieved together through connection and collaboration.
