When military service is a family business, resilience becomes a shared strength.

How do military families cultivate resilience? Hiring Our Heroes Ambassador Dakota Meyer and HOH’s Elizabeth OBrien explored this topic during a fireside chat hosted by Google Public Sector on Tuesday.

During his active-duty service as a U.S. Marine, Dakota was single. As an advocate for veterans and military families, he gained a new perspective on the sacrifices military families make, thanks to insights from military spouses like Elizabeth. Now, he always highlights the families who stand beside service members.

Elizabeth emphasized the resilience military spouses cultivate as they support their service members. “We’re resilient because we have to be. Every day of the week, you don’t know what’s going to happen in your family,” she remarked. “There’s nothing you can throw at a military spouse who’s been at this for 8-10 years that will surprise them. Spouses bring steadiness.”

That steadiness is one of the many reasons military spouses are an asset to their employers. We are grateful for partners like Google who support military spouses, veterans, and transitioning service members through employment pathways and programs like Career Forward.
