    INovative Chemoenzymatic InTEgrated processes

Due to the increasing concern on climate change and environmental issues, the focus of manufacturing industries has been gradually shifting towards the development of alternative greener, safer and sustainable processes.
Views and opinions expressed are however those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European.
In that context, INCITE aims to prove that, at an industrial scale, chemo-enzymatic processes have clear environmental gains, are cost-effective and can contribute to increase safety in the work environment. The project will base its demonstration on two chemo-enzymatic processes one being the esterase-catalyzed of an important precursor in the production of insecticides, and the other being the solvent-free synthesis of oleochemical esters using lipase enzymes.

INCITE brings together 8 European partners, coordinated by OLEON N.V. (Belgium)
    Duration: 48 months (September 2019 - August 2023) | Total budget: € 17.4 M
INCITE has received € 13.3 M funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme on the Topic CE-SPIRE-04-2019 - Efficient integrated downstream processes (Grant Agreement number 870023).

📢 The 31st edition of the A.SPIRE newsletter is out! 📩
🔗 https://lnkd.in/e79QQEvV

🌍 2024 might have seen the famous Brussels mural 'The Future is Europe' pulled down, but A.SPIRE still believes that a sustainable and prosperous made-in-Europe future is possible. Our end-of-the-year newsletter celebrates the commitment of the A.SPIRE/Processes4Planet Partnership community to transform the European process industry, revisiting the Second European Process Industry Conference, the 2024 #SuccessStories and milestones of the projects in which the association is a proud partner.

📗 Published! – Proud of our new publication in Royal Society of Chemistry Green Chemistry, the final result of a four year endeavor in the INCITE Project on using #enzymes for improving the #sustainability of #chemicals production, and specifically Isopropyl Palmitate (IPP).

What did we learn?
⏳ Using a streamlined LCSA methodology with a common goal and scope definition and life cycle inventory reduced the overall time for data collection & interpretation.
For our case, switching to enzymatic catalysis for IPP production...
📉 reduced the environmental impacts due to a triple benefit: less hazardous waste, higher yield, and lower steam consumption.
📊 increased social risks due to longer production times. However, many social benefits such as improved safety are not properly captured by the database.
📈 increased operational cost due to enzyme cost and higher labour cost.

A big thank you to my co-authors Ozan Kocak, Dries Gabriëls, Yblin Roman Escobar, Jordy Motte, Léopold MOTTET and Jo Dewulf, and to Oleon, all INCITE Project partners and the European Commission for funding (Horizon 2020 grant agreement no.870023).

I had the pleasure to visit the INCITE demonstrator at Oleon 's plant in Olegeem and was impressed about the enthuusiasm of their team and the expectation it raised among their customers. A true Succes Story of Processes4Planet Partnership
With the right support towards a real industrial scale, this demonstrator can become one of Europe's game changers

Félicitions à notre adhérent, Avril, et sa filiale Oleon, pour avoir reçu le prestigieux prix "Factory of the Future" ! 💫

Cette distinction souligne l'engagement résolu de la bioéconomie envers l'avenir, mettant en lumière l'usine 4.0 d'@Oléon comme l'une des plus innovantes d'Europe dans la production d'esters, réalisée sans solvants. 💡
