Senior players in the UK food industry have issued a stark warning: the industry is not prepared for climate change, and as a result, may be on the brink of a food security crisis.

But this issue is not unique to the UK. The Carbon Trust's research into the world's ten largest supermarket chains reveals that companies worldwide are struggling to reduce emissions from food production and protect food supply chains from climate change.

With climate change already impacting prices and supply chains, the pressure is on for supermarkets to go further, faster.

The energy market is continuously evolving, but for many consumers, costs are only going up. So, how do we make the retail market work better for them?

At Innovation Zero, our expert Bogi Højgaard CFA took to the stage to explore how we can create a more competitive, customer-first energy retail market.

Key takeaways from the session:
✅ Smarter, more dynamic tariff models can unlock better deals for consumers
✅ Smart meter adoption is critical to enable innovation and demand flexibility
✅ Greater transparency on supplier performance data will empower customers and increase accountability
✅ The retail market must evolve in parallel with the Net Zero transition — with customers at the centre, not left behind

As of 1 April, the Competition & Marketing Authority (CMA) in the UK now has powers to fine companies up to 10% of their global turnover for violating consumer protection laws, including greenwashing.

Our expert Anna McShane shares her advice in The Grocer to companies on avoiding greenwashing and how they can seek support and use industry-backed guidance to boldly and confidently communicate their climate action.

Sunny day 1 is now finished at #Innovationzero world congress and the awards ceremony 🏆 , with all the promise of a great day 2.

Fantastic speakers and pull-no-punches panel discussions with a focus on the opportunities of #decarbonisation for the UK and beyond. Less challenges and more opportunities, which was a welcome change in this 2025 #sustainability events season.

Some takeaways

⚡️ #Energysecurity as a global priority is achievable through investment in and deployment of renewables. This is an area where the UK has leapfrogged other markets. Long may it continue

🪴#Regenerativeagriculture is key to decarbonise the sector, and it’s anticipated that business needs to cough up the cost as consumers won’t. So making the internal case for investment is key - and more sources of deeper funding are welcome

💰 Capital flows towards innovation and #netzero are predictable and different funders with their own models play different parts.

🌍 The perpetuation of global north and global south socio-economic divides was source of concern from many in the audience, who was represented by businesses, policymakers but also many members of civil society. It’s not often you see forums lending themselves to these wide engagements

💫 Delivering net zero will require not a leap of faith (although many speakers were quite skeptical of aspirations) but power - not just energy but will-power, capital and policy muscles.

It was lovely to see many friends from the energy sector and across industries, and geographies represented from the Humber to Morocco 🇲🇦 The greenest carpet in the world lent itself nicely to both walking about 15,000 steps in the Olympia - and some jokes.

Sources of enthusiasm include #digitalisation #ai deployment and #smartmeters (although... some hate them passionately). Nature parallels with #resilience and #flexibility across our economies and ecosystems were poetic and inspiring.

Let’s see what day 2 brings.
