Deploying eDNA to build a better relationship with nature in an urban environment - we love to see it!

This project was a fascinating one for us, working with Hundipea to map the biodiversity in their urban environment, giving them the foundations to build a neighbourhood where people and other species grow together.

The findings included:
➡️ 2,347 different species;
➡️ fungal and bacterial biodiversity comparable to a nearby protected nature reserve;
➡️ fungal diversity in a mini-forest (planted in 2024) was more than double that of areas of regularly mowed grass.

Most importantly, this data has informed a number of decisions which will help biodiversity to flourish in the area, including:
➡️ green roofs and facades to offer nesting areas for birds;
➡️ unmown areas to support fungi and insect habitats;
➡️ algae-rich seabeds to help maintain aquatic biodiversity.

🔊 NEW PAPER PUBLISHED → guidance on the use of eDNA for the energy industry.

We are proud to have contributed to a paper published by the IOGP Joint Industry Program on Environmental Genomics, a comprehensive piece of research, developed by a coalition of experts, providing the energy industry with aligned guidance on the deployment of eDNA for biodiversity monitoring.

Our amazing Edward Wort led the charge on Chapter One, “Efficacy of eDNA vs. Conventional Monitoring Methods,” and collaborated with Stantec on Chapter Two, “eDNA Sampling Standards and Guidelines.”

Together, the paper delivers essential insights for the energy industry (and beyond), with topics including:

➡️ The role of eDNA among various biodiversity monitoring methods
➡️ Appropriate sampling design
➡️ Standards and guidance for laboratory sample analyses
➡️ Navigating bioinformatics and data interpretation

As eDNA-based methods gain traction across the diverse habitats where the energy industry operates, this paper plays a crucial role in providing best practices for seamlessly integrating eDNA into biodiversity monitoring efforts.
