La Cité internationale de la tapisserie fait écho à l’inscription de la tapisserie d’Aubusson au Patrimoine culturel immatériel par l’UNESCO en 2009. Ce lieu dédié au rayonnement de la tapisserie ouvre ses portes à l'été 2016 au sein de l’ancienne École Nationale d’Art Décoratif d’Aubusson, entièrement restructurée : 1200 m2 d'exposition, une plateforme de création contemporaine et d'innovation, un lieu de formation complété par une pépinière art textile / art tissé, le premier centre de ressources sur la tapisserie en Europe.
Dans les paysages dessinés de la Creuse, elle met ainsi en œuvre trois missions principales :
- conserver, valoriser et diffuser un grand patrimoine de la France inscrit à l'Unesco,
- accompagner une filière économique privée encore complète de près de 6 siècles, en affichant ses savoir-faire d'excellence, en facilitant leur transmission et en y encourageant la création contemporaine,
- constituer un pôle d'attractivité sur un territoire rural fragile au coeur de la France, en y développant l'économie touristique et en favorisant l'installation d'activités art textile/art tissé/univers Aubusson dans une logique d'écosystème productif.
