Celebrating Success: 271 Days of Innovation and Collaboration in the Triton Field

Efficiency is the fastest path to decarbonisation. The ongoing 271-day drilling campaign in the Triton field (UKCS) proves this, showcasing the impact of collaborative emissions monitoring, operational efficiency, and transparent data sharing.

A huge thank you to the teams at Serica Energy plc, Dana Petroleum Limited, COSL, Petrofac, and all stakeholders for their commitment to shared learning and emissions reduction—setting a new industry benchmark.

Throughout the summer and winter of 2024, emissions reduction and fuel efficiency were at the forefront of the planning and execution planning meetings. By embedding live emissions tracking, real-time operational insights, and proactive efficiency measures, the team achieved remarkable outcomes to date:

👉 CO2 intensity was reduced from 3.8 Te/m (29/01b-B6) to 2.3 Te/m (21/24a-W7Z) – a 40% improvement in operational efficiency.
👉 Fuel cost savings exceeded $1M, showcasing the financial benefits of data-driven emissions management.

"Through the collaboration of Stepwise, Serica, Dana, COSL, and Petrofac, we have lowered the fuel consumption of a 5th-generation semi-submersible to levels comparable to those of a HE Jack-Up, achieving significant performance improvements on a well-on-well basis."

– Derek Harrold, Well Operations Lead, Serica Energy

These results highlight how transparent data, standardised methodologies, and engaged teams drive measurable impact.

The Power of Open Collaboration

This campaign stands out as an industry-leading example of cross-company collaboration, in line with the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA)

Who’s expectations include:

✅ Fostering collaboration by actively sharing data between the operator, driller, and service providers
✅ Enhancing emissions transparency through systematic fuel tracking and data validation
✅ Establishing a clear baseline to improve future benchmarking and regulatory reporting
✅ Driving cost efficiencies through data-driven decision-making and energy optimisation

This campaign is a blueprint for the future. With the UK expected to adopt Scope 3 emissions charges for vessels over 5000T by 2026, measuring, managing, and reducing emissions has become a business imperative.

By embracing collaborative transparency, the team has developed a replicable model that ensures continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and long-term cost savings.

As we move forward, we invite the industry to join the conversation. What lessons can we take from this campaign to accelerate efficiency in offshore operations? Join the discussion! Let’s continue driving efficiency, emissions reductions, and smarter decision-making across the sector.

A special thanks to:

Dana Petroleum: Charlie Taylor

Stepwise Partners with DNO ASA to Enhance Drilling Efficiency and Emission Reporting on the NCS 👇

Stepwise is excited to announce its collaboration with DNO ASA, a leading oil and gas operator, to deploy the Stepwise Emission web application during the drilling of the Falstaff well 2/6-7 S. Operated by Noble Corporation's Invincible jack-up rig in the North Sea. This partnership signifies a pivotal step in Stepwise’s mission to accelerate the energy sector’s journey toward Net Zero emissions.

Pilot overview

The pilot project began in mid-September 2024 and was set to conclude by the end of November. The Noble Invincible, a Gusto MSC CJ70 X150 MD jack-up rig designed for harsh environments, served as an optimal platform for deployment. Its advanced energy management system ensures reliable performance in the North Sea and enhances fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and lowering operational costs.

The Stepwise Emission application integrates wellbore data and top-hole batch information provided by DNO, drawing from daily drilling reports and operational updates through a planning tool for logistics supplied by Kabal. The project aims to:

– Optimise emission performance: Provide real-time analysis of well emissions to improve efficiency
– Support ESG reporting: Demonstrate contributions to DNO’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, particularly for Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions
– Enhance decision-making: Deliver insights to refine operational strategies

A collaborative approach

The partnership between Stepwise, DNO, Noble, and Well Expertise AS has been characterised by close collaboration and effective communication.

"The cooperation has been seamless, with frequent and productive meetings that have greatly contributed to the success of this pilot project" – said Oda Eikill, Customer Success Manager at Stepwise.

During operations, Stepwise was focused on delivering measurable results utilising the pilot to illustrate DNO’s potential to achieve a real-time overview of the operation. Stepwise aims to build on the success of this project by exploring an extended use of its technology.

Stepwise Partners with Shell to Enhance Decommissioning Efficiency

Stepwise is pleased to announce its collaboration with Shell to support efficiency improvements and emissions reductions during key decommissioning campaigns on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). This partnership demonstrates Stepwise’s focus on providing innovative, data-driven solutions to meet the energy sector’s evolving needs.

Collaboration highlights

The collaboration began with a Plug and Abandon (P&A) campaign on the Gaupe South field, covering two wellbores: 6/3-A-1H and 6/3-E-1H. Following the completion of this phase, the partnership extended to the Knarr decommissioning campaign, which involved seven wellbores and batching activities.

These activities were conducted using Odfjell Drilling’s semi-submersible rig, Deepsea Yantai, known for its advanced capabilities and reliability in challenging offshore environments.

Key objectives and benefits

This collaboration aims to:
• Optimise operational performance with real-time emissions monitoring during well-decommissioning activities.
• Support ESG compliance by providing reliable data for Shell’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
• Improve decision-making through actionable insights that enhance planning and execution efficiency.

A shared commitment to sustainability

“Our collaboration with Shell highlights how our solutions can contribute to emissions reduction and improved operational outcomes. It has been an exciting project to follow together with Shell.”
said Oda Waage Eikill, Customer Success Manager at Stepwise.

Next steps

Stepwise is exploring opportunities to deploy its solutions in other Shell projects, aligning with a broader vision to support sustainable practices and deliver measurable impacts.
