Kenya's largest grassroots movement mobilizing over 4 million people across Kenya’s slums to break survival mode

SHOFCO helps communities in Kenya tackle the challenges posed by increasing urbanization. Our work is focused on giving power, dignity and hope to vulnerable communities, creating opportunities for them to thrive.

We organize and strengthen community groups to equip them with the knowledge, skills and organizational know-how to identify appropriate solutions to their problems.

On April 10-12, 2023, history was made in Nairobi, Kenya, as over 300 children from across Africa gathered for the inaugural Africa Children Summit (ACS 2023). In a powerful demonstration of child-led advocacy, they shared their lived experiences, raised concerns about challenges affecting their well-being, and called for urgent action.

The summit resulted in a communiqué statement with policy recommendations and advocacy asks to guide decision-makers. A report on child rights concerns across Africa was developed, highlighting key issues and priorities. An action plan was also created to outline how children can actively participate in shaping their future.

Building on this momentum, the Kenya Pre-Summit of the 2025 Africa Children Summit is set to take place on February 28 – March 1, 2025. This gathering will serve as a critical platform for children and stakeholders to evaluate progress, strengthen advocacy efforts, and prepare for the next continental summit in South Africa.

On this #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience we join the rest of the world in the push for more girls and young women to break barriers and pursue careers in the STEM field.

However, breaking barriers in STEM education isn't just about access—it's about creating early opportunities that spark curiosity and innovation.

At SHOFCO, we're addressing challenges that keep girls from pursuing STEM careers. Our STEM labs at Kibera and Mathare Schools for Girls transform how young girls engage with science and technology through coding, robotics, Project Based Learning, and engaging with the Engineering Design Process. When given the right tools and support, our girls excel in STEM fields.

The results speak for themselves: our alumni are now pursuing computer science, mechatronic engineering, bio-tech, and mathematics at 10+ U.S. universities. #WomenInSTEM #GirlsInScience

Did you know that 98 million children of school going age across Eastern and Southern Africa region do not attend school due to poverty, insecurity and poor infrastructure?

In Kenya, 1.5 million children have no access to basic education. In informal settlements like Kibera, where residents survive on less than $2 a day, girls face more significant barriers to education, including a lack of access to quality healthcare and resources.

Approximately, every year, 13,000 girls drop out of school due to pregnancy, with counties such as Kilifi recording the highest number of dropouts.
Dropping out of school leads to lower earning potential, and higher risks of contracting HIV, and poorer health outcomes for their children. Additionally, the undervaluing of women and girls means that the most vulnerable may never start school at all.

We recognize these challenges and our resolve to enhance quality education for all children in the underserved urban and rural communities remains steadfast.

In addition to supporting approximately 600+ young girls annually through our two girls' leadership academies, we are also targeting to support 11000+ young girls including teen mothers with full secondary education scholarships in the next few years.

Our mission is clear: enhance access to quality education and support learners with the tools and resources they need to break the vicious cycle of poverty and thrive. #EducateAGirl #Education4All
