Spring break last week was a great opportunity to bring my favorite guy to meet with aerospace startups at the Plug and Play accelerateAZ Aerospace Innovation Day in Scottsdale! Hexoskin has shipped over 20 space payloads for medical research and has worked with most companies involved in human spaceflight, so this was also a chance to exchange ideas on how to make space more accessible for life sciences research.

I was impressed with Max Space's plans for larger and cheaper inflatable modules for future space stations, BlackStar Orbital's reusable spacecrafts (first one is flying this year and will land in Arizona!), and Lunasonde's satellite radars for mining exploration. Also amazing to listen to Jim Cantrell (who was on SpaceX's founding executive team and is now running Phantom Space) talk about the last 35 years of space exploration.

Arizona has a long tradition of supporting space exploration, since even before Apollo crews trained for lunar missions in the 1960s. Good to see so much innovation happening between Phoenix and Tucson right now!

Phoenix's WearTech Center announced this week $4.2 million in funding from the Arizona Commerce Authority and private investors to support 7 startups in the wearable tech space. I've been an advisor to WearTech since the early days and I had the chance to witness their amazing journey. Congrats to Kathleen Lee, Wes Gullett, Gregory Raupp, and the rest of the team, hard work pays off! 💪

Arizona needs more initiatives like this to support Seed and Series A funding of Medtech companies. AZ is uniquely equipped to help these companies build and scale with a fast growing academic research community, world-class hospitals like Mayo Clinic, Banner Health, HonorHealth, Phoenix Children's, and Dignity Health, and advanced manufacturing capabilities in electronics, materials science and robotics.

Last week Mayo Clinic announced an additional $1.9 billion investment in Arizona to add 60% capacity to its already fast growing Phoenix campus. The addition of Mayo Clinic's Discovery Oasis biotechnology corridor will also have a huge impact on the Biotech/Medtech startup ecosystem in the City of Phoenix, one of the fastest growing healthcare market in the OECD - OCDE.

This is another signal for life sciences companies to bet on Arizona's growth and business friendly environment, and make their products and services more accessible to the state's residents.

I'd also advise the VC community to keep an eye for investment opportunities. Arizona punches well above its weight in terms of college enrollment: 8th in the US, with a higher density of college students than MA or CA. Lots of brain power ready to build the next great biotech/medtech company! 🧠 💪
