    Opérateur du ministère des Affaires étrangères pour l'action culturelle extérieure de la France, l'Institut français est chargé, dans le cadre de la politique et des orientation arrêtées par l'Etat, de porter une ambition renouvelée pour notre diplomatie d'influence en contribuant au rayonnement de la France dans un dialogue renforcé avec les cultures étrangères.
    Présidé par Xavier Darcos, entouré de Sylviane Tarsot-Gillery, directrice générale déléguée, et de Laurence Auer, secrétaire générale, l’Institut français se substitue à l’association Culturesfrance sous la forme d’un EPIC (Etablissement public à caractère industriel et commercial) avec un périmètre d’action élargi et des moyens renforcés.
    Aux activités traditionnelles développées par Culturesfrance en matière d’échanges artistiques et d’accueil en France des cultures étrangères, s’ajoutent désormais de nouvelles missions, notamment la promotion à l’international de la langue française, des savoirs et des idées ainsi que la formation des agents du réseau.
    L’Institut français travaille en étroite relation avec le réseau culturel français à l’étranger et veille à répondre aux besoins exprimés par les postes diplomatiques, tout en favorisant les initiatives qui permettent une plus grande mutualisation des projets et des économies d’échelle. Localement, il inscrit son action sous l’autorité des ambassadeurs.
