Day 6 of 12 Days of #Populo: Reimagining Regeneration ❄️

In June, we hosted Reimagining Regeneration at the Dovetail, an exhibition spotlighting the work we're doing on Carpenters Estate featuring talks from the Mayor of Newham and the Carpenters project team. This resident-led regeneration will deliver over 2,000 sustainable homes to Newham, focusing on sustainability, quality homes, and creating real community benefits.

What sets Carpenters apart? It’s a unique, council-driven project prioritising community over profits. Our masterplan, co-designed and approved by residents, future-proofs the estate while improving green spaces and protecting its rich history.

Huge shout out to the team behind Reimagining Regeneration! We’re looking forward to running more events like this in 2025! 🏡🌍✨

It’s always inspiring to see the progress of projects making a difference in other communities! Members of our team recently visited the Meanwhile Creative Quarter site in Harrow to see how works are shaping up.

This exciting project led by Jan Kattein Architects is transforming an underused corner of a town centre car park into a vibrant space with workspaces, community areas, and exhibition venues. It’s a great example of creating community spaces that work with and for the community.

What’s more, the project is leading the way in sustainable construction for temporary buildings. Their strategy includes:
✅ Maximizing usable floorspace by eliminating internal circulation
✅ Designing small-scale, relocatable buildings
✅ Using genuinely demountable and reusable materials like shipping containers

Great to chat with the team at Sullivan Bros (Construction) Ltd who are hard at work, and Meanwhile Space CIC who will be taking over the space in 2025.

Day 5 of 12 Days Of #Populo: Recognising Leadership at Populo

This May, our CEO Deborah Heenan was honoured as a finalist for the Women in Housing Awards, which celebrate leaders and innovators shaping the housing sector.

Under Deborah’s stewardship, Populo Living has experienced extraordinary growth, becoming one of the largest council-owned housing companies in the UK. Since 2018, we’ve delivered nearly 800 homes, with over 2000 in the pipeline. In the last year alone, Deb has overseen the addition of 300 new homes to our portfolio - an incredible feat during a time of economic uncertainty.

Deb’s impact isn’t just measured in numbers. She’s a champion for inclusion, ensuring folks from underrepresented backgrounds have the opportunities and support to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Highlights of her achievements include:
🏡 Leading resident-first designs at Carpenters Estate, unlocking 2,000+ homes.
🌍 Launching initiatives that prioritise sustainability in housing.
💼 Growing our team while championing local talent!

12 Days of #Populo: Day 3! ❄️

This March we completed phase two of the #Didsbury, a stunning development which transforms East Ham's original 1939 Town Hall Annexe into 37 new build apartments boasting two additional floors, private outdoor spaces, art-deco accents, a peaceful communal courtyard, and fantastic transport links.

So proud of our project team and the architects at dRMM behind this build, which won a 'highly commended' award at last year's Love to Rent Build to Rent awards!

Day 4 of our '12 Days Of #Populo' series: Celebrating Plaistow Hub!

Early this year, Plaistow Hub welcomed its first residents, marking a key milestone in our mission to create high-quality homes and thriving communities in Newham. Just steps from Plaistow Station, this landmark development brings 182 new Build to Rent homes alongside spaces designed to connect residents and neighbours alike: a gym, a public square, and a café set to open in the new year.

We’re especially proud that Plaistow Hub earned a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Best Build to Rent category at this year’s #BTRAwards (Love to Rent), recognised among the industry’s top names for its quality.

A big thanks to our partners Pitman Tozer Architects and Vistry Group’s Countryside Partnerships for helping us deliver this transformative project, as well as to our wonderful team Guy Powell MRICS 🙌
