We are the Infarmers and your city is our farm

Infarm is a global vertical farming company that revolutionises the food supply chain and helps make cities self-sufficient in their food production. It was founded in Berlin in 2013 by Osnat Michaeli and the brothers Guy and Erez Galonska, who turned a 1955 Airstream trailer into the world's first mobile vertical farm. From this humble beginning, Infarm has partnered with the world’s top retail chains and is focused on North America and Europe.

Infarm’s product catalogue consists of a variety of more than 75 plants such as herbs, leafy greens, salads and microgreens. Infarm's modular farming systems are highly efficient, capable of growing more than 500,000 plants annually on just 40m2 of floor space. In addition to using 95% less land, Infarm requires 95% less water than traditional farming methods and uses no chemical pesticides. So far, Infarm has harvested over 40 million plants, while saving more than 145 million litres of water, more than 203,000m2 of land, and nearly 1.6 million food miles (about 3 million km) with its production methods.

Infarm has set a science-based net-zero carbon target through The Science Based Targets initiative and is a Certified B CorporationTM. Infarm’s operating entities are embedded in a holding company, infarm Indoor Urban Farming B.V, which is registered in The Netherlands. For more information, please visit www.infarm.com.

"Since agriculture is both the largest user and a significant polluter of freshwater, the answer to the water scarcity crisis lies in technology and next-generation farming. In other words: we have an urgent and desperate need for an agricultural revolution. One that we believe has already begun".

This article, published by #Infarm's Chief Impact Officer, Sudhanshu Sarronwala, a year and a half ago, is no less relevant today.
This #WorldWaterDay, we invite you to read it with the hopes it won't be relevant soon.

"Decarbonisation is not easy, given the fossil-fuel-based systems we are so deeply immersed in. Which is one reason why many companies have resorted to what they believe is a convenient shortcut: carbon offsets".

Michelle You, Supercritical's Co-founder and CEO, and Arnavaz Schatten, #Infarm's Director of Sustainability and Impact, shed light on why traditional offsets can do more harm than good, and discuss one of the most promising solutions for beyond-value-chain mitigation and the transition to Net Zero: Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies.
What is the standpoint of the SBTi, why is it critical to act now, and what can companies do to help the CDR industry to scale? All that and much more in this fascinating co-written blog post.

This World Water Day, we must remember that 70% of global freshwater withdrawals are made for agricultural use. Meanwhile, 3.2 billion people—40% of the world’s population— live in agricultural areas with high to very high water shortages or scarcity.

At Infarm, we are dedicated to promoting sustainable and efficient farming practices that conserve our precious water resources. For example, our closed-loop irrigation systems, allow us to use 95% less water than open-field farming.

Also, Controlled Environment Agriculture allows for year-round crop production, regardless of weather conditions. This means crops can be grown almost anywhere, reducing the need for water-intensive irrigation in arid regions. Additionally, we use significantly less pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers than traditional farming, which means less runoff into our water sources, making them cleaner and safer for wildlife.

We are committed to using this innovative approach to accelerate change and create a more sustainable and resilient food system for future generations, and so far have saved 216 million litres of water. That’s enough water to fill 86 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This amount is equivalent to a lifetime drinking water supply of about 2,500 people.

Join us and millions of others in accelerating change to solve the water crisis and preserve our planet's precious water resources. For more details on World Water Day 2023, go to https://lnkd.in/dUHhePS. To play your part go to https://lnkd.in/g52t6DZP.

"If you only track your carbon footprint, not growing will seem the only possible way to tackle it. But then there's a purpose you're playing, a reason for your business to be there, and in that context, growth is a good thing. You cannot completely decouple your growth from your carbon footprint, but you can improve its intensity".

Arnavaz Schatten, Director of Sustainability & Impact at INFARM, joined an expert panel at a recent Berlin event hosted by Balderton Capital.

Alongside Janina Bauer (former Nakladal), Global Director of Sustainability at Celonis, and Luis Orsini-Rosenberg, Co-founder and CEO of CYCLE, Arnavaz discussed how tech start-ups could manage their carbon footprint alongside growth.

Here are 9 pieces of advice from the panel members, which was moderated by Balderton Capital's Head of Impact, Elodie Broad:
