A Chinese artificial intelligence company called DeepSeek AI is grabbing America's attention — and sending a shock wave through Wall Street — due to its new tech, which some experts say rivals that of OpenAI's ChatGPT.

It overtook ChatGPT to become the top free program on the Apple's App Store. The company was only founded in 2023, and it says it developed this model in just two months.

DeepSeek is also catching investors off guard because of the low development costs for its AI app, which analysts pegged at only $6 million.

"If you can build a model like Deepseek in a couple of weeks, it's going to be a different world where suddenly lots of companies can build their own AI models where we can insert AI models into smaller things," said The Atlantic's Nicholas Thompson. DEI has its roots in the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which barred employment discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion and other criteria.
