The latest edition of EB Insights is here!

🦅 Within hours of inauguration, Donald Trump made good on promises — or, rather, threats — to withdraw the United States from numerous international agencies and treaties, including the WHO and the Paris Agreement.

🛢️He also repeated his campaign message of "drill, baby, drill", signing an executive order that will boost exploration and production of oil, gas and critical minerals in the US.

Observers are now asking if China will step into the climate leadership void – a key point of discussion at this week's World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, which opened at the same time as Trump's inauguration.

As the spectre of new trade wars looms following United States president Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Davos crowd of policy and business leaders has been looking to China for answers on how to respond to the climate emergency amid a rapidly transforming world order.

In his special address, Chinese vice-premier Ding Xuexiang said China does not want trade disputes and signalled that it is committed to “make greater contributions to the global climate response”.

He emphasised China's commitments to a low-carbon transition and renewable energy and also called on Davos leaders to provide “more stability and certainty for the world”.

In his first day back as president, Donald Trump signed several new executive orders intended to relieve what he called a "national energy emergency" and boost the exploration and production of oil, gas and critical minerals in the US. These orders would weaken environmental safeguards for energy projects.

In another order, Trump also withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement.

International organisations reaffirmed their commitment to global climate action despite Trump’s decision, and lamented the lost opportunities for the US.

ClientEarth, an environmental law non-profit, described the withdrawal as a “reckless abandonment of leadership that weakens global cooperation at a critical moment”.

“We look forward to the day we can welcome the US back into the Paris Agreement. In the meantime, businesses, investors, cities and regions along with countries around the world will continue to go all in for the Paris Agreement,” said the We Mean Business Coalition, a non-profit for corporate climate action.

We are hours away from the start of Trump's second presidency. Scientists, climate activists and Chief Sustainability Officers around Asia are unsure of what's to come.

A Bloomberg exclusive quotes people familiar with the matter as saying that Trump is poised to invoke emergency powers as part of his plan to unleash domestic energy production, while seeking to reverse the Biden administration's climate policies.

As Trump rolls out his changes, what will transpire? We took a look at some of our previously published stories to see what his presidency could mean for the region.
