The overall purpose of Velokhaya - which takes its name from the French word for cycling (velo) and the Xhosa word for home (khaya) - is to achieve ‘Growth through Cycling’; to give underprivileged children in South Africa the skills and the opportunities they need to make a success of their lives – in other words, to develop as champions, both on and off the bike.
We use the sport of cycling as a platform for growing and empowering children living in marginalised communities in South Africa, and we do this by implementing a range of holistic development programs aimed at improving education, developing human potential and teaching valuable life skills.
Since 2003, we have witnessed how our cycling-based programs have helped children from one of South Africa’s poorest communities deal with the social and personal challenges they face - and how the programs have inspired these children to use their achievements in cycling (which build self-esteem and confidence) to make a success of their lives. At Velokhaya we give young South Africans – regardless of race, or socio-economic status – an opporunity to become champions and we are immensely grateful to our corporate sponsors and the many individuals who support the work we do. These include Velokhaya’s Patron, the international ‘voice of cycling’, commentator, Phil Liggett (OBE).
