🌍🔒 Today is Safer Internet Day 2024 – a global initiative dedicated to making the online world safer and more inclusive for everyone.

Here’s a look at how various organisations are marking the occasion and driving positive change:

🔷 Children's Commissioner for England has raised concerns about harmful content online, often promoted algorithmically, which threatens children’s safety. While the internet offers many opportunities, current platforms lack essential protections. Young people want better safeguards, and it’s crucial that parents stay engaged. However, tech companies and policymakers also need to enforce stricter safety measures.

🔷In support of Safer Internet Day 2025, MoneySavingExpert.com advocates for stronger tech regulations and increased scam awareness. Research shows that nearly half of young people (8-17) have encountered online scams, with some as young as 8 losing money. With 79% of young people seeing scams monthly, and 20% encountering them daily, educating young users about scams is key to navigating the digital world safely.

🔷Virgin Media, in collaboration with Internet Matters, is offering tools and guidance to help families stay safe online. Emphasizing the importance of educating children about scams, they are also using AI-powered fraud prevention tools to protect young users. Their Find The Right Words campaign provides free resources for parents on topics like cyberbullying, scams, and privacy risks. Additionally, they offer Essential Security and Advanced Security to block harmful content, manage screen time, and filter inappropriate websites.

🔷Samsung Electronics UK, provides valuable resources to help parents and children manage digital risks. Their ‘Online Together Project’ promotes open conversations about online safety issues, such as online hate. This year, Samsung is raising awareness through marketing campaigns, in-store promotions, and providing free educational resources for teachers on AI literacy for students through the Solve for Tomorrow Next Gen program.

🔷The BBC will also host a Live Lesson on CBBC featuring the Scam Smashers game, while discussions will explore the impact of AI on online safety and how the government can combat online scams. Key advice includes being cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, never sharing personal information online, and speaking to a trusted adult if something feels suspicious.

It’s great to see these initiatives, advice, and resources taking center stage. By staying informed, having open conversations with our families, and supporting efforts that promote online safety, we can help protect the next generation in the digital world.

🚨 New T&S Cheat Sheet: Best Practices for Effective Content Moderation

As we prepare for the Trust & Safety Summit 2025, we’re rolling out a series of expert-driven cheat sheets to help platforms create safer and more transparent digital spaces. This edition focuses on content moderation, which is essential for ensuring user trust, maintaining community standards, and preventing legal challenges.

Here are the key strategies for effective moderation:

✅ Establish Clear Community Guidelines – Define acceptable content and enforce rules consistently to build trust.

🤖 Balance Human & Automated Moderation – AI scales moderation, but human oversight ensures fairness and context. A hybrid approach is key.

📢 Encourage Community Reporting – Empower users to flag harmful content while preventing system abuse with transparent review processes.

🔍 Monitor Emerging Trends & Threats – Stay ahead of evolving risks by continuously analyzing and updating moderation strategies.

🛠 Protect Moderator Well-Being – Support moderators with mental health resources, workload management, and task rotation to prevent burnout.

📖 Ensure Transparency & Appeals – Users should understand moderation decisions and have a fair appeal process to maintain trust and accountability.
