How Can Emerging Fund Managers Increase Their Chances of Reaching First Close?

Emerging fund managers face challenging fundraising environments - 45% fail to reach first close, and the extended fundraising timelines often discourage aspiring fund managers.

For our latest publication, "How Can African SME Funds Mobilise More Capital ?", we analyzed 135 funds and identified two strategies that triple the likelihood of reaching first close:

✅ Raising progressively, starting with smaller fund sizes (<$5M)
✅ Partnering with sponsors or platforms

Successful fund managers also focus their efforts on specific pools of capital:

🔹 Impact funding windows from international DFIs
🔹 African corporates and individual investors
🔹 African sovereign investors
🔹 Pan-African funds-of-funds

Only a quarter of First-Time African Fund Managers reach their target fund size !

Out of the 104 first-time and emerging fund managers we studied for our latest publication, only a quarter hit their target or viable fund size. Even among those with strong track records and differentiated strategies, many ultimately abandon the process.

The journey is long and demanding—on average, first-time fund managers take between one to four years to achieve first close and three to six years to reach their target fund size.

This raises critical questions for our investment ecosystems: What can be done to accelerate the fundraising cycle for first time and emerging fund managers? How can LPs better support these GPs to strengthen Africa’s SME funds landscape?
