Photonics BW wurde im Juli 2000 als gemeinnütziger Verein zur Förderung der Optischen Technologien in Baden-Württemberg gegründet. In den folgenden Jahren von 2001 bis 2009 hat sich Photonics BW mit Förderung durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) zu dem Innovationsnetz für Optische Technologien in Baden-Württemberg entwickelt. Photonics BW vereint heute rund 90 Mitglieder aus Industrie, KMU, Start-Ups, Forschung sowie Banken und Beratungseinrichtungen.
