💰 The European Commission is highlighting #HorizonEurope’s economic impact in a new interim evaluation. Over €43 billion has already been invested into more than 15,000 projects, with estimates suggesting each euro spent could generate up to €11 in GDP gains by 2045.

“Horizon Europe stands at the heart of European #competitiveness and innovation strength,” the Commission said. But with only 3 in 10 top-rated proposals receiving #funding, #research leaders warn that stronger investment is essential.

As discussions continue over Horizon’s successor, calls are growing to place R&I at the centre of Europe’s future growth strategy.

🔬 The UK and Switzerland are set to gain access to strategic #HorizonEurope calls in 2025, including funding for sensitive #quantum and #space research—marking a major shift in EU policy.

🇬🇧 Previously excluded from these areas, both countries will now be eligible for key calls seen as critical to the EU’s technological independence. “Thanks to this welcome news, the opportunities for British researchers and businesses working in quantum, space, and beyond are only set to grow,” said UK science minister Lord Patrick Vallance.

🇨🇭 Switzerland will also gain access to strategic calls in #AI, quantum, network technologies, and more, though some space-related calls remain under discussion.

📉 As the Trump administration marks its first 100 days, the US is set to eliminate the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation—an agency that manages nearly 60 international #science and #technology #agreements, along with over 2,000 sub-agreements.

The closure, part of broader State Department cuts, is raising serious concerns among science advocates. Without this office, experts warn, the #US risks losing critical access to international research facilities and weakening its role in global science diplomacy. “No other office can negotiate these science and technology agreements,” said one State Department official. “It puts the US at a huge disadvantage.”
