The French Surfing Federation was created in 1964 in Biarritz. It has received authority from the State to manage, regulate, organize and promote surfing.

La Fédération Française de Surf a été créée en 1964 à Biarritz. Elle a reçu pouvoir de l’Etat pour diriger, réglementer, organiser et promouvoir le surf.
Elle compte quelque 80.000 licenciés, dont un tiers sont des femmes.
Près de 200 clubs sont affiliés à la Fédération. Ils sont installés au Pays basque, Landes, Gironde, Charentes, Pays de Loire, Bretagne, Manche, Normandie, Nord, Méditerranée, Guadeloupe, Martinique, La Réunion, Nouvelle-Calédonie.
150 structures disposent du Label Ecole Française de Surf. Elles s’étalent sur toute la façade atlantique, en Méditerranée et à l'outremer.
La Fédération Française de Surf est seule habilitée à décerner des titres de champions de France de surf et de ses disciplines associées : longboard, bodyboard, stand up paddle, stand up paddle race, kneeboard, bodysurf, tandem, para surf et para surf adapté.
