Créé en 1916 dans la tourmente de la Première Guerre mondiale, l’Office national des combattants et des victimes de guerre (ONaCVG) est un établissement public, sous tutelle du ministère des Armées, chargé de préserver les intérêts matériels et moraux de ses ressortissants : anciens combattants, invalides et blessés de guerre, veuves de guerre, pupilles de la Nation, victimes de guerre et plus récemment, d’actes terroristes.
Pour s’adapter au contexte économique et social du pays, l’ONACVG a vu ses missions évoluer au fil du temps. A la reconnaissance et la réparation est venu s’ajouter, depuis les années 80, un travail de mémoire effectué en liaison étroite avec les enseignants et le monde associatif avec comme point d’appui les dix hauts lieux de mémoire gérés par l’ONACVG depuis 2011.
En 2016, l’ONACVG qui a également en charge l’Œuvre Nationale du Bleuet de France (ONBF) a célébré le centenaire de sa création.
