**Insights from Sam's Club China’s former President Andrew Miles on Building a Successful Retail Brand in China**

On Monday night, we had the privilege of hosting Andrew Miles, former President of Sam’s Club China, for an inspiring session at CEIBS—moderated by Prof. Frank Bournois, CEIBS Vice President and Dean, Professor of Governance and Leadership, and Michelin Chair Professor.

Over 100 alumni gathered to hear how Andrew led Sam’s Club to become one of China’s most successful retail brands.

Drawing from his 12-year journey with Sam’s and his many years of experience from retail across the world, Andrew shared strategic insights on leadership, execution, and adapting to China’s unique market landscape. At the core of his decision-making were three guiding questions:

✅ What can you be the best at?
✅ Will everyone get excited by this?
✅ Will it make us money?

He also emphasized the need for brave leadership and the importance of over-communicating the “why” behind every strategy.

From procurement to localization, the evening sparked thoughtful discussion on what it takes to succeed in China's dynamic retail landscape—while staying true to your brand’s core values.

Key Takeaways:
🔹 Put the customer first
🔹 Execute with discipline
🔹 Lead with courage
🔹 Align your team with clear communication

🙌 Special Thanks
To Andrew Miles for his unfiltered wisdom, and GEMBA '17 alum Irene Dai who bridged this industry-academia exchange – proving the power of our #CEIBSGlobalNetwork.
