The Syndicat mixte de protection du littoral breton, commonly known as Vigipol, was created following the Amoco Cadiz oil spill in 1978 to bring together coastal communities that were victims of pollution, defend their interests in court and obtain redress and compensation for the damage suffered.

Le Syndicat mixte de protection du littoral breton, communément appelé Vigipol, a été créé suite à la marée noire de l’Amoco Cadiz de 1978 pour rassembler les collectivités littorales victimes de la pollution, défendre leurs intérêts devant les tribunaux et obtenir réparation et indemnisation des dommages subis.
Aujourd'hui, Vigipol rassemble 135 communes du littoral breton, les départements du Finistère, des Côtes d’Armor et de la Manche, ainsi que la région Bretagne. Vigipol défend les intérêts de ses adhérents face aux risques issus du trafic maritime au large des côtes bretonnes, au travers de missions de prévention des accidents, de préparation des collectivités littorales à la gestion des pollutions (démarche Infra POLMAR), de gestion de crise et de réparation des dommages. Il collabore avec l’ensemble des acteurs impliqués dans cette thématique (services de l’État, experts, associations, acteurs du transport maritime, etc.) et développe des partenariats avec d’autres régions tant au niveau national qu’international.
