Le CNA est une instance consultative indépendante, placée auprès des ministères chargés de l’environnement, de la consommation, de la santé et de l'agriculture.
Il est consulté sur la définition des politiques de l’alimentation et émet des avis à destination de la décision publique et des maillons de la chaîne alimentaire sur des sujets tels que la qualité alimentaire, l’information des consommateurs, la nutrition, la sécurité sanitaire, l’accès à l’alimentation, la prévention des crises, etc.
