🕴️Who were the top investors in #Africa in 2024?
According to our records, the most active investor last year - and the only one to take part in more than 20 $100k+ deals - was 54 Collective (previously Founders Factory Africa) with 26 deals i.e. more than two deals a month on average (!)
Another two Top8 investors had already made the list in 2023, 2022 and 2021: Techstars and Launch Africa Ventures*.
To these we can add Catalyst Fund* that was one of the Top8 investors in 2023 as well. A
The other four investors that make up the rest of the Top8 were Digital Africa, Baobab Network, Renew Capital, and EdVentures.
We should add that some of the investors on this list also ventured below the $100k bar, and have in fact done more deals overall than the $100k+ deals we’re focusing for this analysis.
Overall, we found a total of 520+ investors involved in at least one $100k+ deal on the continent (exc. grants & exits) last year. This is a large community, but not as large as it used to be in 2023 (610+), or 2022 (1,000+)...

Everything you need to know about start-up funding in #Africa in just 5️⃣ seconds? 🫨
Well, Sorry. That's just not possible.
However, if you have 5️⃣0️⃣ minutes, you should find our 2024 Round-Up presentation from yesterday quite interesting. If 50 minutes is too much, you can get the slides directly and read them at your own pace. Or check out our newsletter.
But if you only have 1️⃣ minute, here are the Top 1️⃣0️⃣ Takeaways from our 2024 analysis:
💰 African start-ups raised $2.2b in funding in 2024, a -25% YoY drop.
📊 The second half of the year outperformed both H1’24 and H2’23
💵 Equity ‘only’ dropped -11% YoY ($1.5b) while debt levels contracted more significantly
🇰🇪 Kenya attracted the most funding (29%); 84% went to the ‘Big Four’
🤳 Fintech was back on top, with 47% of the funding; climate tech (32%) did well, except for energy
🐘 Half of the funding went to the 10 companies that raised the most
🦄 2024 saw the minting of 2 new unicorns: Tyme and Moniepoint
🤦 Female-led and female-funded startups received their lowest share of funding on record
🕴🏻 The number of active investors in Africa declined to its lowest since at least 2021; 54 Collective was the most active investor
🌍 Equity funding dropped YoY in Africa, but bounced back in LatAm(9%), the US (21%) & India (+40%)
And this is just the top of the iceberg...

Our 2024 Round-Up is getting dangerously close... Have you marked your calendars? Because 950+ people already have!
💸 #Fintech attracted almost half ($1b) of all the start-up funding raised in #Africa in 2024...
💥 It wasn't always going to be like that. Mid-year, it was only making up 22% of all investments, and wasn't even the first sector. And then H2 happened, with Moniepoint, Tyme and others.
🔋 #Energy was the second sector on the list in terms of funding in 2024 (20%) - just like in 2023 -, driven to a large extent by two of the year’s ten top raisers who made up nearly two thirds of the amount: d.light and Sun King. YoY the total dropped -42% though.
🛻 Logistics & Transportation did much better though: not only did it hold its third spot, but it was also the only sector to attract more funding in 2024 compared to 2023, therefore seeing its share of the total funding grow to 13%. Three of 2024’s ten top raisers were in this sector: moove, Basigo and Spiro.
🌍 If we look specifically at climate-related investments - therefore straddling multiple sectors -, Climate Tech represented 32% of the total invested in start-ups in Africa in 2024, a bit less than in 2023 (36%). This decrease is mostly due to the drop in funding going to the energy sector.
On the positive side, non-energy Climate Tech investments were almost stable between 2023 and 2024...
