$2.3B across 129 deals.
2024 was a breakout year for #Neurotech.

📊 The latest Neurotech Funding Snapshot highlights a sector on the rise, with a nearly 90% CAGR over the past 2 years. If the trend holds, 2025 could surpass $4B in funding.

Some key takeaways:

🦾 Implanted vs. non-implanted: Fewer deals for implanted neurotech, but raised more capital ($1.3B vs. $1B) – a strong signal of investor confidence in hardware-driven innovation.

🧠 Peripheral nerve stimulation ($799M) and brain-computer interfaces ($571M) dominated, with ultrasound, AI, and digital health also attracting capital.

🔬 R&D investment is strong – $381M went into new platform technologies and early-stage neurotech innovations, laying the groundwork for the next wave of breakthroughs. Exciting to see MintNeuro among the early-stage investments helping to build the future of neural interfaces.

📈 Markets with the highest funding: Pain ($399M), R&D ($381M), and Parkinson’s ($278M). Promising markets, such as depression ($205M) and Alzheimer’s ($108M), are also on the rise, reflecting growing interest in neurotech solutions for mental health and neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurotech is moving from research to real-world applications at an accelerating pace. The challenge now is scaling these innovations into viable businesses.

For founders, positioning and timing matter more than ever.
For investors, the question is no longer if neurotech will scale – but how fast.

Over the past decade, semiconductor innovation has been driven by two trends, each shaping technology in distinct yet complementary ways.

🔥 AI chips have aggressively scaled performance, incorporating tens of billions of transistors and consuming hundreds of watts per chip to power everything from advanced chatbots to self-driving vehicles. This relentless pursuit of computing power has delivered extraordinary capabilities, but also led to rapidly increasing energy use, excessive heat, and lower returns in efficiency.

⚡ Bioelectronics, on the other hand, have taken the opposite path, prioritising extremely low power use and maximum efficiency. These tiny devices operate at microwatt levels, powering continuous health-monitoring wearables, advanced prosthetics, and neural implants designed to integrate seamlessly with the human body. Many already function for years on small batteries, and researchers are increasingly exploring wireless power and even device that harvest energy directly from the body.

What’s next?

🔜 AI hardware must move beyond brute force scaling. Innovation will focus on smarter, energy-efficient designs, including brain-inspired neuromorphic systems and photonic computing, which uses light to drastically cut energy consumption and latency. Modular chiplet approaches will combine specialised components tailored specifically for tasks like language processing or autonomous navigation, significantly improving performance per watt and supporting sustainable growth.

🔜 Bioelectronics will become increasingly intelligent, adaptive, and autonomous. Healthcare devices will shift from passive monitoring towards actively predicting health conditions, locally processing data, and providing personalised treatments. Chiplet-based architectures will greatly enhance flexibility and scalability, seamlessly integrating sensing, processing, and therapeutic functions. Advances in wireless power and energy harvesting will significantly extend implant lifespans, while closed-loop systems that respond in real-time to biological signals will transform personalised healthcare.

🔮 Ultimately, these two trends will converge.
AI will adopt biology’s energy efficiency, while bioelectronics will incorporate AI’s intelligence. Low-power, adaptive, autonomous chips represent the shared future, enabling breakthroughs across personalised medicine, intelligent computing, and human-machine integration.

We are entering an era where intelligence meets efficiency, and computing blends seamlessly with biology.

🧠 ARIA just kicked off the Precision Neurotechnologies programme with a 2-day event in London... and MintNeuro was there! This is the 1st programme launched under the Scalable Neural Interfaces opportunity space.

But first, some background.

🔷 What is ARIA?

Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) is a UK R&D funding agency on a mission to unlock scientific and technological breakthroughs that benefit everyone.

🔷 What are “Opportunity Spaces”?

These are critically important but underexplored research areas where breakthroughs are possible. They lay the foundation for multi-year programmes and spark additional seed funding for bold ideas.

🔷What is “Scalable Neural Interfaces”?

This opportunity space is built on the belief that better ways to interface with the brain will transform how we treat neurological conditions and understand cognition. But current approaches face key limitations:

➤ Scalability – brain interfaces could help many conditions, but today’s methods are too costly and slow to scale. Increasing the number of safe, affordable procedures is key.

➤ Precision vs Invasiveness – there’s a trade-off: precise interventions tend to be invasive, while non-invasive approaches lack control. But there’s no fundamental reason we can’t develop solutions that are both targeted and minimally invasive.

➤ Multimodal Integration – treating brain disorders requires tools with chemical, temporal, and spatial precision. This can only be achieved by bridging advances in engineered hardware and biology.

🔷 What is the “Precision Neurotechnologies” programme?

Backed by £69m, this first programme is developing new ways to interface with the brain at the circuit level, with unprecedented precision. The goal is to combine breakthroughs in engineered biology and hardware to tackle complex brain disorders. It is led by Jacques, Programme Director, with support from Gillian and Tom.

🔷 Why does this matter now?

The programme is now funding 19 teams spanning academia, non-profit R&D organisations, and startups. These new projects fall into 4 workstreams:

✅ Non-Invasive Interfaces – Capturing and modulating brain activity without surgery.

✅ Remote Interfaces – Developing techniques for interfacing with the brain from a distance.

✅ Biological Interfaces – Engineering living systems to interact with neural circuits.

✅ Future Adoption of Neurotechnologies – Tackling the human, ethical, and regulatory challenges of next-generation brain tech.

At MintNeuro, we’re thrilled to be part of 3 of these world-class teams and actively engage with the others. Together, we aim to push the boundaries of neural interfaces, address adoption challenges, and design future technologies that drive greater inclusivity and equity.

Stay tuned for more updates as the projects develop!
