The design research centre creating impact from emerging technologies
Redefining innovation at the intersection of technology, culture and human perception, the EPFL+ECAL Lab is the design research centre of the EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne), located in the building of ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne). The lab’s creative approach, combined with scientific methodologies, has opened new perspectives in fields including health, media, museums, security and immersive environments. Projects aim to produce working prototypes as well as knowledge about adoption factors to define disruptive, yet impactful and sustainable outcomes. This work is developed in collaboration with companies, public institutions, foundations and universities.

Scientific performance and emerging technologies can radically change our outlook on the world. But how can they provide significant benefits for humans and the planet? How can we create innovation with sustainable impact for citizens, the environment and the economy? Health, education, social connections, living spaces, work, media, culture; we need to work on building a better life for everyone, creating things that matter. Many important innovative periods in history, from the Renaissance to the decentralisation of the digital world, have been pushed by a close collaboration between science, technology, creativity and culture.
