Future of The Internet

In 1994, our colleagues Per Florén and Jörgen Jedbratt, together with Peter Gustafsson, published the book Internet: Your Guide to the Future of Business.

Three decades later, it is time to reflect again on what the Internet once was, what it has become, and what it might evolve into in the future.

We live in an era where understanding the fundamentals—such as megatrends and institutional changes—is of utmost importance. The Internet remains one of the most transformative forces in this context.

The 1990s were marked by bold visions of the future, some of which have materialized today. In contrast, the 2020s have seen an “underhype” of the future. While technological setbacks have occurred, the shift in structures may have evolved faster than our collective understanding.

This project will utilize tools and methods developed over 30 years at Kairos Future to explore the future through scenario planning. We have already assembled a group of leading thinkers and organizations to analyze this topic and develop future scenarios. In Sweden, the project is set to be presented at #Internetdagarna this November.

For decades, we've celebrated the "perfect life" – a successful career, an active family life, and a constant stream of achievements to share on social media. Faster, higher, stronger has been the mantra.

But what's the price of this perpetual pursuit of speed?

Just as the AI revolution is accelerating everything, perhaps we need to reevaluate our relationship with time. Paradoxically, our human "slowness" might prove to be our greatest strength in an AI-driven world.

Think about it:
🔸 Slow food improves health
🔸 Slow thinking reduces mistakes
🔸 Thoughtfulness is our best cybersecurity defense

When we embrace slowness, we enhance what makes us uniquely human – our capacity for deep reflection, creativity, and meaningful relationships.
Perhaps the way forward isn't to compete with AI on speed, but to deepen our human strengths?
