C'est ainsi, que le Syndicat Intercommunal d'Assainissement du Nord, le SIAN, est créé en 1971. L'unification des deux Syndicats, depuis longtemps envisagée, a pu se mettre en oeuvre en janvier 2009 grâce à la Loi sur l'Eau et les Milieux Aquatiques (LEMA).
Le SIDEN-SIAN, regroupe désormais l'ensemble des compétences à la carte des deux syndicats : l'Eau Potable, l'Assainissement Collectif et Non Collectif, les Eaux Pluviales, la Défense Extérieure Contre l'Incendie. Pour l'exploitation des services relevant de ses compétences, il est doté de deux Régies à simple autonomie financière.
Pour plus de 730 communes du Nord, du Pas-de-Calais, de l'Aisne et de la Somme, le SIDEN-SIAN, établissement public administré par les élus, constitue un outil de coopération intercommunale spécialisé dans le domaine de l'eau.
