Die Kombination aus Gewerkschaft und Berufsverband hat sich im DJV bewährt. Der DJV setzt auf die Gemeinsamkeit von Redakteuren und freien Journalisten und kämpft gegen die Bildung von Gräben zwischen den Berufsgruppen. Fairer Lohn und faires Honorar sind für den DJV gleichwertige Themen. Dafür stehen rund 33.000 DJV-Mitglieder aus allen Bereichen des Journalismus.

Beim DJV fließen die Interessen der Journalistinnen und Journalisten unmittelbar in die Gewerkschaftsarbeit und berufsverbandliche Aktivitäten ein. Fachkundige Mitarbeiter/innen vertreten haupt- und ehrenamtlich die medienpolitischen Belange der Journalistinnen und Journalisten. Die basisnahe föderalistische Gliederung des DJV stellt sicher, dass regional und fachlich unterschiedliche Ansprüche in der Gewerkschaftsarbeit berücksichtigt werden. DJV-Mitglieder können sich aktiv an der Arbeit beteiligen und ihre Interessen einbringen: regional über die 17 selbstständigen Landesverbände und deren lokale Gliederungen, fachspezifisch über spezielle Kommissionen und über Fachausschüsse einzelner Berufszweige.
