France’s 3rd largest Mediterranean port. New deep-sea infrastructure (-16 m) - Port of the Energy transition.

The port of Port-La Nouvelle is a French port in the Mediterranean that is transforming itself into a major port for the energy transition.

A new deep-sea infrastructure is currently under construction. It will increase the existing traffic and expand into new activities like those related to marine renewables. The port will increase from 60 to 210 hectares and water depth will reach 16 m to accommodate ships up to 60 to 80,000 dwt.

A construction site of 7 hectares dedicated to the floating offshore wind farms industry is already active. It will expand to 40-44 hectares to serve the future generations of floating wind turbines.

Port-La Nouvelle will also be a major port for green hydrogen. The Hyd'occ plant will be delivered end 2024. It will produce renewable hydrogen on a massive scale to meet local needs for heavy mobility, industry and power generation. Operations will begin in 2025 with 3,000 tonnes/year. By 2030, the unit will produce 6,000 tonnes (50 MW).

Regarding the dry bulk, liquid bulk and breakbulk activities, the corresponding terminals will be operative in 2026.

Port-La Nouvelle thus intends to amplify its logistics role while taking up the challenge of decarbonization.

The Port is owned by the Region Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, second largest region in France. The Region has entrusted the port concession to the SEMOP, a semi-public Company. The SEMOP brings together the public actors (49%) such as the Region Occitanie and the Banque des Territoires with a group of private shareholders (51%). This private consortium consists of DEME CONCESSIONS (European operator of port concessions), EUROPORTS (international group of terminal operators), PMV (investment funds), QAIR (independent producer of renewable electricity) and the AUDE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

This organization is a new model of public/private governance in France. Port-La Nouvelle is the 1st French Port to be privately managed.
