L’UNICEM fédère 8 branches d’activités qui se situent, pour la plupart, en amont du BTP. Plus précisément, cette fédération couvre trois domaines d’activités :
- l’extraction de ressources minérales et leur traitement (granulats et pierres naturelles). Ainsi, l’UNICEM regroupe la quasi-totalité des branches de ce secteur extractif - le ciment ainsi les tuiles et briques étant en outre partenaires de l’Union pour leur dimension extractive.
- une partie importante de la filière béton (avec le béton prêt à l’emploi),
- des industries et services connexes (adjuvants pour béton et pompage du béton).
L’UNICEM assiste et informe ses entreprises adhérentes dans des domaines tels que la protection de l'environnement, la qualité des produits, la conjoncture économique, la législation... L’Union gère la convention collective des Carrières et Matériaux. Elle a mis en place 13 syndicats régionaux qui assurent aux entreprises un service de proximité.
