L'hôpital national des Quinze-Vingts assure les missions d’un hôpital universitaire : les soins, l‘enseignement, la recherche et la prévention. Lié par convention de partenariat hospitalo-universitaire avec l’AP-HP, il est entièrement tournée vers la prise en charge des maladies de l’œil et la pratique d’opérations chirurgicales : cataracte, dégénérescence maculaire liée à l’âge, rétine, glaucome, greffe de cornée, rétine, myopie, strabisme, voies lacrymales, paupières, uvéite, tumeurs.
L’offre de soins est construite autour de trois centres spécialisés du glaucome, de la cornée (y compris chirurgie réfractive et kératocône) et de la rétine, venus compléter le centre des consultations d’ophtalmologie, et propose, outre l’accueil des urgences ophtalmologiques 24h/24 et 7jours/7, la prise en charge de la majeure partie de la pathologie ophtalmologique, qu’elle soit médicale, chirurgicale ou neuro ophtalmologique. Un service de médecine interne complète cette palette de prise en charge.
L’hôpital accueille l’Institut de la vision dont la vocation consiste non seulement à promouvoir la recherche fondamentale sur la vision mais également à permettre le développement d’entreprises impliquées dans la prévention et le traitement des affections oculaires.
En 2018, le projet le projet FOReSIGHT, a été labellisé IHU - Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire - par le gouvernement.
