Supporting crafts and creation since the 17th century, the Mobilier national's mission is to ensure the conservation and restoration of its unique collections in the world, perpetuate and transmit exceptional know-how. Haut lieu de patrimoine, l'institution est aussi un acteur majeur de la création contemporaine et de la promotion des arts décoratifs à la française.
Le Mobilier national crée et restaure également des dizaines de milliers de meubles et d'objets destinés à l'ameublement et au décor des édifices publics en France et à l'étranger. Trois cent artisans d'art œuvrent au sein du Mobilier national, à Paris et en région. Les manufactures des Gobelins et de Beauvais sont vouées à la tapisserie, la manufacture de la Savonnerie au tapis, les ateliers du Puy-en-Velay et d'Alençon à la dentelle. Sept ateliers de restauration se répartissent les différentes spécialités du bois, du métal et du textile. Résolument tournée vers l'avenir, l'institution dispose d'un Atelier de Recherche et de Création – l'ARC – créé en 1964 à l'initiative d'André Malraux, afin de promouvoir la création et le design contemporain en France. L'ARC constitue une incomparable vitrine du design qui n'a eu de cesse de créer pour la commande d’État des prototypes d'excellence en étroite collaboration avec les meilleurs designers français.
