Il est né en Ardèche en 2009, suite aux Etats Généraux de l'Industrie initiés par l'Etat.
Vilesta fédère des industriels donneurs d'ordre, des équipementiers, des sous-traitants et des sociétés de service qui travaillent dans le secteur du véhicule industriel et de loisirs. Les entreprises adhérentes conçoivent, produisent et commercialisent des véhicules, des pièces, des composants et des savoir-faire.
Vilesta fait partie du Pôle de Compétitivité CIMES, au côté des autres clusters de l'intergrappe d'Auvergne Rhône-Alpes qui rassemble Mécabourg, Mécaloire et Mont-Blanc Industries. Ce rapprochement permet des synergies d'actions inter-clusters, à l'échelle régionale, pour développer la filière des véhicules autour de l'ingénierie et du manufacturing de systèmes mécaniques intelligents.
