"L'Etoile de Martin" was created in September 2006 by the parents of Martin, a little boy who died on 30 January 2006, aged 2, after courageously fighting for over a year against a rare form of cancer. Of the 160,000 children diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year, 90,000 die.
Medical research has made tremendous progress over the past 20 years, helping to save more children, improve their quality of life during treatments, and limit side effects. However, too many children still lose their battle against cancer. "Cancer" covers many different things, including very rare diseases that have low survival rates (e.g. neuroblastomes, brain tumours, and some forms of metastased cancers). The fact that there are only a small number of cases limits the ability to obtain conclusive research results.
Side effects can be significant, with sight, hearing, heart or cognitive capacities often impacted. During therapy, which is often long and involves invasive treatments, the daily routine of these sick children is painful and prevents a normal life for them and their families.
The experience of Martin's parents, as well as that of other families they met during their son's disease, has pushed them, with some friends and family, to launch a charity to support research efforts into children’s cancer and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children cancer patients.
The charity raises its funds through multiple channels. Its core source of funds is private and company donations. Other funds come through the sale of hand-made decorative objects and jewellery, sporting events and bake sales across France.
Since 2006 l’Etoile de Martin has raised more than 4 million euros.
Funds raised are used in majority for research (80%) but also for providing moments of fun to hospitalised children (20%) via weekly music and art classes.
L’Etoile de Martin is a volunteer charity with less than 4% administrative costs: 96% of your donations go to the children !

Aujourd'hui, 2500 nouveaux jeunes par an sont touchés par un cancer en France.
La recherche a beaucoup avancé ces 30 dernières années permettant de guérir davantage d'enfants, d'améliorer la qualité de vie pendant les traitements, de réduire les séquelles. Même si 75% d'entre eux guérissent, beaucoup deviennent des petites étoiles.
Certains cancers ont un pronostic particulièrement incertain: c'est le cas par exemple du neuroblastome, des tumeurs au cerveau et des formes métastatiques de certains cancers. Leur rareté n'est pas un facteur favorable pour que la recherche avance vite.
Par ailleurs, les séquelles sont encore souvent importantes : atteintes cognitives, motrices, cardiaques, visuelles, auditives, stérilité, ....
Le quotidien de ces enfants malades est particulièrement pénible, douloureux, avec des traitements longs et lourds qui souvent ne leur permettent pas de mener une vie normale. Soutenus et aidés par un réseau solidaire et engagé, les parents de Martin ont décidé de fonder l’association en octobre 2006, afin de contribuer à la lutte contre les cancers pédiatriques qui en ont tant besoin, et ainsi tenter de donner un sens à cette terrible et injuste disparition.
L’association poursuit 2 objectifs :
-> SOUTENIR LA RECHERCHE sur les cancers pédiatriques en participant au financement de programmes.
-> Offrir des MOMENTS DE DETENTE ET DE PLAISIR AUX ENFANTS MALADES en participant au financement d’actions spécifiques telles que les Arts Plastiques, la Musique, la Magie par exemple.
