The University of Ottawa Research Chair on Accountable Artificial Intelligence in a Global World

The Chair on Accountable Artificial Intelligence in a Global Context explores the social challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) from a legal perspective. We especially work on social inequalities, with a focus on race, gender and intersectionality. We also study inequalities between the Global North and South, in particular the deployment and design of AI in Africa. Finally, we analyze an area that is still largely unexplored: the risks of AI on humanitarian actions, human rights, and international relations. The aim is to identify inequalities and promote technical and legal solutions to overcome them.

    Our ongoing projects include:

o DelibAnalysis (machine learning tool to predict the democratic quality of political discourse)
o Racial Profiling and Technology: Systemic Algorithmic Racism
    o Women and AI
    o Humanitarian Action and AI
o Education and Technology (Smart Campus)
o Uses of AI in the fight against COVID-19 in Senegal and Mali: Adaptability to the local context and social acceptability for ethical and responsible AI

We are also hosting the Inclusive Technology Lab, which combines law and data science to produce tools at the service of law and society.
