Description
  • Value proposition

60 Senators represent the Belgian federated entities in the high chamber of the Federal Parliament.

At federal level, the Belgian Senate is the assembly of the federated entities: these are the Communities and Regions in Belgium. It is composed of 60 members of the directly elected parliaments of the federated entities, and are appointed by their colleagues in these parliaments.
The senators participate in federal decision-making or take a position on it.
The Senate embodies federal legitimacy. Through the senators, the federal states can enter into dialogue with each other or with the federal government.
The Senate, together with the House of Representatives, is fully competent for the Constitution and legislation on the organisation and functioning of the institutions of the federal state and of the federated entities.
The Senate can also draw up information reports, in particular when a rule affects the competence of one or more other levels of competence (State, Communities, Regions).
