Die Gemeinnützige Hertie-Stiftung wurde 1974 von den Erben des Kaufhausinhabers Georg Karg ins Leben gerufen und ist heute eine der größten weltanschaulich unabhängigen und unternehmerisch ungebundenen Stiftungen in Deutschland. Der Name „Hertie“
geht zurück auf Hermann Tietz, Mitbegründer des gleichnamigen Warenhauskonzerns zum Ende des 19. Jahrhundert.
