Le Syndicat Mixte d'Aménagement de la Vallée de la Durance (SMAVD) œuvre dans les domaines :
- de l’aménagement et la gestion du lit de la Durance,
- de l’amélioration de la sécurité et de la protection contre les crues,
- de la gestion du transport solide,
- de la préservation et amélioration du patrimoine naturel,
- de la maîtrise des différents usages de la rivière
- et enfin en tant qu'organisme labellisé EPTB (Établissement Public Territorial de Bassin) de la gestion équilibrée de la ressource en eau et de la construction d'une gouvernance à cette échelle.
Créé en 1976 entre les collectivités riveraines de la Basse-Durance, le SMAVD regroupe la Région PACA, les 4 Départements de Vaucluse, Bouches du Rhône, Alpes de Haute Provence et Hautes Alpes ainsi que les 13 intercommunalités riveraines de la Durance entre Serre-Ponçon et le Rhône.
