Elle correspond à un bassin de population de près de 10 millions d'habitants (17% de la population française), qui sont plus souvent frappés et meurent davantage qu'ailleurs en France du cancer. Cette interrégion dispose d'un potentiel regroupant près de 63 équipes de recherche labellisées (INSERM, CNRS, Universités) collaborant avec 49 services cliniques et laboratoires hospitaliers autour du terme fédérateur "Du dépistage des tumeurs à l'innovation thérapeutique". Le Cancéropôle Nord-Ouest est depuis le 28 août 2008 un Groupement d'Intérêt Public (GIP) créé pour 9 ans par 13 membres fondateurs issus de l'interrégion Nord-Ouest: 4 universités, 4 centres hospitaliers universitaires (CHU), 3 centres de lutte contre le cancer (CLCC), l'INSERM et le CNRS.
