Description

    Climate and environmental adaptation

AXA Climate, a subsidiary of the AXA group, was founded to help both private and public players adapt to climate and environmental challenges. We are over 250 people providing support through insurance, training, consulting, and software solutions.

Addressing climate adaptation only through risk management is a dead end.

Adapting means embracing a systemic view of risks—both environmental and social—and understanding how they are interconnected. Adapting is about recognizing the unique realities of local contexts fostering cooperation among stakeholders, beyond individual interests. Adapting is essential to ensure the long-term viability of our communities and businesses. Adapting also means not forgetting the importance of making bold strides to reduce our emissions significantly—and doing so with urgency.

As climate impacts intensify, emerging countries are on the frontline — often with the fewest resources to adapt.

At AXA Climate, we’re channeling our expertise in risk modelling and parametric insurance to strengthen public resilience — from open-source catastrophe models in Madagascar with the Global Risk Modelling Alliance, to agricultural insurance for 300,000 farmers in the DRC with the World Bank, microinsurance for women artisans in Mexico with the AFD - Agence Française de Développement and Mexican Ministry of Finance, and climate risk modelling for telecom infrastructure across West Africa with The World Bank.

💪 Public-private partnerships are at the core of this work.
By collaborating with development banks, local governments, and international institutions we co-create solutions that are both technically robust and locally grounded.

The goal? Faster disaster response, stronger social protection, and climate-informed decisions that enable long-term resilience.

▶️ Hear more from Karina Whalley, Head of Public Sector at AXA Climate, in this short video on how we help public institutions to protect vulnerable populations.

💡 Curious about what has caught our attention in March ?

🌎 #Climate change: according to the latest OECD and UNDP research, strong climate action could enhance global economic development, decrease poverty, and prevent enormous losses.

✅ #Greenhouse gas: UK greenhouse gas emissions fell to its lowest level since 1872 in 2024 due to reduced coal use, cleaner energy, and increased EV uptake.

🤿 #Ice diving: as Arctic warming accelerates sea ice loss, human-led ice dives are providing vital data on how thinning ice is transforming underwater ecosystems and reshaping marine biodiversity.

🌋 #Volcano activity : glacier retreat due to climate change may boost volcanic activity in Iceland by reducing underground magma system pressure.

✊ #Climate justice: while climate change affects women disproportionately, they are under-represented in leadership, prompting calls for equal participation to boost climate action.

👀 All eyes on #Nature and #Biodiversity !

According to the Media Observatory on Ecology, only 1.1% of French media news time was devoted to biodiversity during the first quarter. Want to tip the balance? Check out our press review on nature and biodiversity!

👓 Let’s put on our nature glasses to look at the news reported in March.

News # 1 🦋
Binghamton University's Science study found a 22% decline in US butterfly populations between 2000 and 2020. 107 species have lost more than 50% of their population, and 33% of the 342 species under study are declining. Julia's Skipper and West Virginia White have dropped almost 90%. Habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and drought have exacerbated the Southwest U.S. collapse. Growing wildflowers, adopting conservation practices, and using fewer pesticides can help recover from losses, say scientists. Butterflies are vital pollinators and early indicators of ecosystem health.

News # 2 🌊
The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) has launched the first science-based targets for oceans and the seafood industry. This launch complements the SBTN's initial environmental targets for land, freshwater and marine ecosystems. These targets enable companies to measure and reduce their environmental impact in a scientific manner. The objectives relating to the oceans aim to prevent overfishing, preserve coral reefs and seagrass beds, threatened and protected species.

News # 3 🫣
"The Green New Deal scam is over," said Lee Zeldin, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Environmental regulations are "choking" the US economy, therefore Trump has begun an unprecedented attack. Trump's staff, backed by the fossil fuel business, will quickly eliminate prior presidents' air quality, industrial emissions, biodiversity, and natural area rules. Written working materials by scientists and NGOs warn that this approach could endanger biodiversity.

News # 4 💪
At COP 16, which resumed on 25–27 February 2025, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a funding system and a resource mobilisation plan. To implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), monitoring and coordination with other agreements were also agreed. Negotiations between wealthy and developing nations led to a financial resource mobilisation treaty. COP 16 President Susana Muhamad believes these decisions give the GBF ‘arms, legs and muscles’ to act.

News # 5 🧊
Scientists are investigating the biological consequences of the world's largest iceberg, A23a, stranded on South Georgia, a British island home to millions of seals and penguins. Freshwater from the melting iceberg may affect krill concentrations, potentially making it harder for macaroni penguins to find sources of food. However, glacier melting may also lead to phytoplankton blooms, supporting marine ecosystems and blue whales and prawns. Moreover, scientists have dubbed A23a a "nutrient bomb" for potential ocean productivity improvements.
