A Universidade da Coruña foi creada pola Lei 11/1989 do 20 de xullo, de ordenación do sistema universitario de Galicia. O Claustro Constituínte aprobou, o día 4 de febreiro de 1992, os Estatutos da Universidade que foron publicados no DOG do 17 de setembro de 1992.
A Universidade da Coruña está estruturada territorialmente en: campus da Coruña e campus de Ferrol.
É unha institución pública que ten como finalidade esencial a xeración, a xestión e a difusión de cultura e de coñecemento científico, tecnolóxico e profesional a través do desenvolvemento da investigación e da docencia.
