The Spanish Multiple Sclerosis Association (AEDEM-COCEMFE) began to operate in 1981 as a section within the Auxilia association, although it was legally recognised by the Ministry of the Interior in August 1984.

The Honorary Presidency is held by HRH Infanta Elena de Borbón and, given the important collaboration and support she has provided in our work, the Honourable Duchess of Alba was appointed Honorary President of the National Executive Committee on 19 April 1997, a position she held until her death in November 2014.
AEDEM-COCEMFE was declared a Public Utility Entity by agreement of the Council of Ministers on 26 March 1993.
In 1995, the Ministry of Justice and the Interior authorized, at the request of our Entity, the celebration on 18 December of each year of the "National Multiple Sclerosis Day"TM whose main objectives are the dissemination of information on Multiple Sclerosis, through awareness campaigns, and the raising of funds that are destined to the development of its projects and activities.
The Spanish Multiple Sclerosis Association is part, as a State Entity, of the Spanish Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities (COCEMFE), hence it was renamed AEDEM-COCEMFE

La Asociación Española de Esclerosis Múltiple (AEDEM-COCEMFE) comenzó a funcionar en 1981 como sección dentro de la asociación Auxilia, aunque fue reconocida jurídicamente por el Ministerio del Interior en agosto de 1984.
AEDEM-COCEMFE es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro que congrega a afectados de Esclerosis Múltiple, sus familiares y personas sensibilizadas con la problemática de esta enfermedad. Asimismo, cuenta con la colaboración de profesionales de la salud y otras disciplinas relacionadas con esta patología.
Su ámbito de actuación es estatal y su sede se halla en Madrid. Cuenta con 46 asociaciones miembros de ámbito local, comarcal, provincial o autonómico. Además, colabora con otras entidades de idéntica o similar finalidad.
Tiene un Comité de Honor constituido por destacadas personalidades que apoyan a AEDEM-COCEMFE en algunas de sus actividades. La Presidencia de Honor la ostenta S.A.R. La Infanta Doña Elena de Borbón y, dada la importante colaboración y apoyo que ha prestado en nuestra labor, la Excma. Sra. Duquesa de Alba fue nombrada Presidenta de Honor de la Comisión Ejecutiva Nacional el 19 de abril de 1997, cargo que mantuvo hasta su fallecimiento en noviembre de 2014.
AEDEM-COCEMFE fue declarada Entidad de Utilidad Pública, por acuerdo del Consejo de Ministros, el 26 de marzo de 1993.
En el año 1995, el Ministerio de Justicia e Interior autorizó, a petición de nuestra Entidad, la celebración el 18 de diciembre de cada año, del " ̃Día Nacional de la Esclerosis Múltiple"TM cuyos objetivos principales son la difusión de información sobre la Esclerosis Múltiple, mediante campañas de sensibilización, y la recaudación de fondos que se destinan al desarrollo de sus proyectos y actividades.
La Asociación Española de Esclerosis Múltiple forma parte, como Entidad Estatal, de la Confederación Española de Personas con Discapacidad Física y Orgánica (COCEMFE), de ahí que pasara a llamarse AEDEM-COCEMFE
